Travellers with chronic illnesses

People with chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes mellitus, asthma, or arthritis, may face challenges when they travel overseas. Nevertheless, with planning and preparation, people with chronic illnesses can have safe and enjoyable trips. It is crucial for you to arrange a travel health consultation at least 6 weeks before departure.

Preparation
  • Plan your trip well in advance.
  • Consult your doctor about:
    • Appropriate vaccination schedules - Some vaccines require several weeks before giving effective protection.
    • Participation in strenuous activities like health spas and trekking.
    • Anti-malarial measures - Ask about anti-mosquito measures and the necessity of anti-malarial medication. Be aware of the side effects of these medications.
    • Existing chronic illnesses - Review your present health status and see if there are any special measures that need to be taken for the trip. Carry all necessary medication and medical items for the entire duration of the journey. All medications should be packed in your hand baggage, in their original containers with clear labels. You can also bring a duplicate supply in the checked luggage as a precaution.
  • Travellers should bring a medical record with information about their medical condition(s) and details of the medication(s).
  • Insurance - Advisable for those going on a long trip or to faraway places and should include provisions for emergency evacuation.
