Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

USA: Avian Influenza [Update]

Ohio state health officials have reported the state's first probable human case of Influenza A (H5) in an adult male Mercer County farm worker who was in contact with deceased commercial poultry was infected with the virus.

Through February 11 this year, the Ministry of Health reports 4310 confirmed cases of Oropouche fever, with the bulk of the cases in 4021 cases reported in Espirito Santo state in southeastern Brazil.

USA: Measles [Update]

The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting an outbreak of Measles in Gaines County. At this time, 24 cases have been identified with symptom onset within the last two weeks.

Bangladesh: Chikungunya Fever and Zika Virus Infection

Bangladesh has recorded 67 cases of Chikungunya and 11 cases of Zika virus in the country in 2024, according to a report of The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research.

Argentina: Dengue Fever [Update]

From epidemiological week 31 of 2024 to week 5 of 2025, 28,815 suspected cases of dengue were reported in Argentina in the National Health Surveillance System, of which 467 were confirmed.

Philippines: Dengue Fever [Update]

11 February 2025

Officials with the Iloilo Provincial Health Office report an increase in dengue fever cases during the first month of 2025. Late last week, health officials report 385 cases and four deaths during January 2025, a 58 percent increase from the same period in 2024, when 244 cases and no deaths were recorded.

South Sudan: Mpox (monkeypox)

The South Sudan Ministry of Health declared a mpox outbreak in Juba, Central Equatoria State on Friday. The case was confirmed Thursday in a Ugandan national and a resident of Kupuri Camp in Juba.

Nigeria: Lassa Fever [Update]

Nigeria health officials have reported 53 deaths due to Lassa fever during the first four weeks of 2025, a 10 percent increase compared to the same period last year (48). To date, 290 confirmed cases, 1171 suspected and one probable Lassa fever case has been reported.

To date, for 2025, 15 cases of dengue have been reported on the island of St. Croix, according to the Territorial Epidemiologist for the Virgin Islands Department of Health.
