Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Singapore: Dengue fever [Update]

The Singapore National Environment Agency is reporting more than 10,000 total Dengue cases to date, more than was recorded in all of 2023.

Iran: Dengue fever

The World Health Organization reports that in Bandar-Lengheh, Hormozgan Province, within southern Iran, autochthonous cases of Dengue fever have been reported since last month.

USA: Dengue fever [Update]

The USA Florida Department of Health reported two additional locally-transmitted Dengue fever cases in Miami-Dade County during the past week.

India: Nipah Virus Infection

23 July 2024

Officials in Kerala state in southern India are reporting a fatal case of Nipah virus infection in a 14-year-old boy from Mallapuram district in Kerala. The national Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reports the boy exhibited Acute Encephalitis Syndrome symptoms and was admitted to a healthcare facility in Perinthalmanna before being transferred to a higher health center in Kozhikode. However, the patient later succumbed to the disease.

Costa Rica: Dengue fever [Update]

The Costa Rica Ministry of Health is alerting the population due to the increase in Dengue cases and is intensifying efforts to combat the increase. Through the first six months of 2024, Costa Rica has recorded a total of 12,328 cases of dengue and fortunately, no deaths.

The Uganda Ministry of Health has reported an additional human Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever case from Masodde sub-county.

Pakistan officials report an additional Wild Poliovirus type 1 case in a 1.5-year-old child from Zhob district, Balochistan.

USA: Measles [Update]

23 July 2024

The USA Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed that an adult resident from Worcester County who recently traveled internationally was diagnosed with Measles in early July 2024. This is the first confirmed case of measles in a Massachusetts resident since early 2020. The Department of Health is also reporting a case of measles in a South Dakota resident.

Health officials in United Kingdom are reporting on the increase in cases of Pertussis since the end of 2023 in Scotland.

Myanmar: Cholera

The Myanmar Ministry of Health reports the presence of Cholera in Yangon, the largest city in the country. As of 17 July, there are 77 confirmed cases of hospitalization.
