In Yobe state of Nigeria, there were 690 cases of Cholera with 33 fatalities. In Nasarawa State, at least 189 Cholera cases were reported between June and 25 August 2011, 11 of which died. As of 29 August 2011, there were 70 cases of Cholera with 2 fatalities in Sokoto state.

Over 26 000 cases of Measles are reported in Europe so far this year and there have been a fair share of severe cases. In France, over 14 000 cases and 6 deaths are reported.

In Indonesia, six residents suffered from Anthrax in Sabu Raijua District, East Nusa Tenggara after consuming cow carcasses. Over a week, 56 cows were dead of the disease.

In Metro Manila of the Philippines, Dengue Fever killed 77 people from January to 23 August this year. There were more than 11 000 Dengue Fever cases from January up to the first week of August this year. The number was more than double the number of cases recorded during the same period last year. In Quezon City of the Philippines, the number of Dengue Fever cases reached 3 948 with 29 fatalities from January to 20 August this year, compared with 1 264 Dengue Fever cases and 20 fatalities in the same period last year.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said a new Avian Influenza H5N1 strain (clade 2.3.2.1) had emerged recently in Viet Nam and China and existing poultry vaccines were ineffective against it. The World Health Organization closely monitors the evolution of influenza viruses and based on available information, this evolution of H5N1 virus poses no increased risk to public health.

As widespread violent clashes occurred in many cities across Syria, including Daraa, Latakia, Damascus, Baniyas, Aleppo, Homs and Hama, resulting in serious casualties, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has raised the Outbound Travel Alert (OTA) for Syria to Black. Residents are urged to avoid all travel to the country. Those already there should attend to their personal safety and avoid protests and large gatherings of people.
