Egypt: Avian Influenza, human

Egypt has announced a new human case of H5N1 Avian Influenza infection. The case was a two-year-old male from Fayoum Governorate. He was hospitalized and was in a critical condition at the moment. Investigations indicated a recent history of contact with dead poultry. Of the 56 human cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 23 were fatal.

Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human, suspected

In Indonesia, a suspected human fatal case due to Avian Influenza infection was reported in West Java. The victim was a 6-year-old girl who died on 28 February 2009.

Japan: Avian Influenza, bird

In Japan, the Avian Influenza H7N6 virus was identified in 2 quail farms in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture.

Taiwan: Measles

In Taiwan, two outbreaks of Measles affecting 11 people were reported in northern and central region. The index cases in these two outbreaks had travelled to Mainland before the onset of symptoms.

Nigeria: Meningococcal Disease [update]

The outbreak of Meningococcal Disease continued to affect Nigeria. As of 22 February 2009, 5 323 suspected cases including 333 deaths were reported in the country. Suspected cases have been reported from 22 of 37 states.
